I built a custom Linux gaming PC, and installed Ubuntu on it. I made some poor choices, but eventually got the thing working. After a week of testing and reflecting on the experience, I have a few thoughts. POP OS is the way to go for gaming on LINUX.
-ovitckJldU&t=7m38s 7:38 I do game on my mac, it runs the native games more or less fine but the limiting factor, as always, is that there is no compatibility and most games aren't developed for Mac.
Linux is scattered and fragmented and overcomlicated to setup and, worst of all, a lot of distros are incompatible with each other. This is why linux will NEVER be a mainstream OS. For linux to ever be a competitor to windows, it needs to be rewritten with full GUI support for setup and configuration, like windows is. I have been checking out linux since the 90's and it really hasn't come very far, other that their being a million more distros out there.
Also, as you point out, the Linux user base is completely toxic.
To continue on with the toxic repo suggestions, I'm personally a big fan of Manjaro which is an arch variant. Most things when I was using it for gaming worked out of the box and stuff that didn't had an arch wiki solution that I could pretty easily duplicate and it wouldn't have problems.
Manjaro is not for everybody the dev team seems to be pretty hell bent on making it a one-click solution which I do like.
Owwn the Linux community are so adorable, specially when you are a beginner and ask obvious questions about any topic…. 😒
I don’t know why, but almost all the tech community is toxic like that…
Believe it or not but Linux is more stable then windows 10 or windows 11 with a 6000 series gpu due huge driver issues currently in last 6 months
Honestly, being an Elitist sucks. It does not matter what you are an elitist snob about, forcing your taste and opinion on other people is a shittake if it goes beyond just memeing.
Ofc I tell windows users that complain ALL THE TIME how Linux is better, but I never try to actually convince them. 😂Good Video. We can only try our best to feel open minded as a community as opposed to the few bad apples that are the loudest lol.
oh and PS: Debian Mint is a godsend for everything creative. Super easy while super stable. I stopped distro hopping half a year ago because of it hah.
I've said it elsewhere, but bears repeating....
If you want a good experience and a better one in future - donate.
Sure if you can throw some serious coin down, great!
However, even if it coffee cup prices - it's still adding.
If everyone did that, there would be more coin in the purse for programmers to devote more time and thus get more development done....
in a few words, if u have nvidia keep away from linux, if u have amd then go and install it, right now.
Distro does not matter
What software you install does
Ubuntu... eheheh..... What could go wrong he said... heheheh what couldn't go wrong? heheheh....
Ubuntu just sucks nowdays... Fedora Wins.
But you make a good point we should guide people and help them, be kind to them and even make more friendly community, chatting space for linux users to help each other , such as in discord/forums , etc.
Not be the indifferent smart-as-ses we see out there sometimes.
For me Linux mint was a good 1st distro for me because i came from windows i think regular ubuntu is better by default for a mac user thats just in my opinion tho lots of distros seem cool
i only recommend my favorite distro because it is crazy lightweight and will likely boost your fps on the average even when compared to ubuntu. puppy linux is my fav distro, its intimidating at first but once you learn their system its user friendly as it gets imo.
Thank you for having a platform and saying a lot of what I keep saying about Linux. I want Linux to work for me, but I keep finding myself hitting issue after issue like you. And I have been testing with Linux for a few decades now. It is just so hard to get honest and up to date information when it comes to Linux.
Anticheat is really the main thing holding back Linux gaming in my opinion. Most singlke player games work great but any modern multiplayer game has anticheat and since they don't play well with Linux we don't get to play them.
Here is to hoping anticheat gets less intrusive and starts working on Linux machines.
The answer is simple for linux distros... You wanna best desktop experience with a good gaming support? install any debian based linux like ubuntu, pop, mint, etc.... Want better performer and gaming experience with a decent desktop feel, pick ANY Arch or Fedora distros and you'll ask why? simple, the kernels of those distros are adapted for one side or another taking many similitude in between, that's why many linux user make mistake about "what linux is best for" and in reallity, is all about your choice cuz its all resume of what do you want for YOUR experience and that's the beauty of the freedom that Linux give you and others OS dont
Distro hopping is fun and you'll learn on the way.
Linux Mint or Zorin 😊
In all my years of linux, I have had not ONE distro work out of the box. Always some driver, or UI issue. Over time I found out that the LEAST jank linux distro I have used and still use to this day is linux mint. I have installed linux mint on many different devices, all with some form of driver error (usually I need to use the driver manager to update the graphic driver), I have installed mint on old 32 bit machines, AMD machines, Intel machines, machines with and without various Nvidia cards. Mint is the distro I recommend, ubuntu based and with an intuitive design to boot, It is a solid distro. BUT there are a lot more distros out there with different strengths and weaknesses. And the distro you choose, ubuntu is a perfectly fine linux distro. I personally thank you for giving linux a try.
