The Best of Rossini

Gioachino Rossini Gioachino Antonio Rossini (29 February 1792 – 13 November 1868) was an Italian composer who gained fame for his 39 operas, although he also wrote many songs, some chamber music and piano pieces, and some sacred music. He set new standards for both comic and serious opera before retiring from large-scale composition while still in his thirties, at the height of his popularity. Born in Pesaro to parents who were both musicians (his father a trumpeter, his mother a singer), Rossini began to compose by the age of 12 and was educated at music school in Bologna. His first opera was performed in Venice in 1810 when he was 18 years old. In 1815 he was engaged to write operas and manage theatres in Naples. In the period 1810–1823 he wrote 34 operas for the Italian stage that were performed in Venice, Milan, Ferrara, Naples and elsewhere; this productivity necessitated an almost formulaic approach for some components (such as overtures) and a certain amount of self-borrowing. During this period he produced his most popular works including the comic operas L'italiana in Algeri, Il barbiere di Siviglia (known in English as The Barber of Seville) and La Cenerentola, which brought to a peak the opera buffa tradition he inherited from masters such as Domenico Cimarosa. He also composed opera seria works such as Otello, Tancredi and Semiramide. All of these attracted admiration for their innovation in melody, harmonic and instrumental colour, and dramatic form. In 1824 he was contracted by the Opéra in Paris, for which he produced an opera to celebrate the coronation of Charles X, Il viaggio a Reims (later cannibalised for his first opera in French, Le comte Ory), revisions of two of his Italian operas, Le siège de Corinthe and Moïse, and in 1829 his last opera, Guillaume Tell. Rossini's withdrawal from opera for the last 40 years of his life has never been fully explained; contributary factors may have been ill-health, the wealth his success had brought him, and the rise of spectacular grand opera under composers such as Giacomo Meyerbeer. From the early 1830s to 1855, when he left Paris and was based in Bologna, Rossini wrote relatively little. On his return to Paris in 1855 he became renowned for his musical salons on Saturdays, regularly attended by musicians and the artistic and fashionable circles of Paris, for which he wrote the entertaining pieces Péchés de vieillesse. Guests included Franz Liszt, Anton Rubinstein, Giuseppe Verdi, Meyerbeer and Joseph Joachim. Rossini's last major composition was his Petite messe solennelle (1863). He died in Paris in 1868.

00:00 Il barbiere di Siviglia 06:50 La scala di seta 12:57 L'Italiana in Algeri 21:00 Il signor Bruschino 25:30 Il Turco in Italia 34:00 La Cenerentola 42:00 La cambiale di matrimonio 47:20 La pietra del paragone 00:00 Севильский цирюльник 06:50 Шелковая лестница 12:57 Итальянка в Алжире 21:00 Г-н Брускино 25:30 Турок в Италии 34:00 Золушка 42:00 Закон о браке 47:20 Пробный камень Меноса Мострара Среди итальянских композиторов XIX в. А. Пушкин

He studied at the prestigious Liceo Musicale of Bologna, where he already had a very good level in horn and singing. There he learned cello, piano, viola and counterpoint, and acquired a great mastery of instrumentation, orchestration and harmonic structuring while working as a rehearsal pianist in the theater. Gioachino Rossini profoundly marked the history of 19th century opera by bringing the Italian bel canto to its peak: he adorned the opera buffa with energetic and brilliant arias endowed with a new naturalness, and developed and innovated orchestral writing, thus preparing the blossoming of romanticism. Rossini: Petite Messe Solenelle | Riccardo Chailly & the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra (full concert)

Gioachino Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle, in the orchestral version! It’s played by the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra under the baton of conductor Riccardo Chailly. The concert was held in the year 2008 in the Gewandhaus, Leipzig. Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle was composed in 1863; the last of his Péchés de vieillesse series – Sins of Old Age, as the composer named them. For its premiere iteration in 1864, Rossini had written a work purely for two pianos and a harmonium. In 1866-67, partly in fear that it would be done after his death regardless, Rossini (1792-1868) discreetly scored the Petite Messe Solennelle for orchestra – without losing any of its candor or subtlety. The resultant arrangement received its first public performance on 28 February, 1869 – three months after the composer's death. Rossini - La Gazza Ladra (The Thieving Magpie): Overture [HQ]

✖ All music and images copyrights belong to original artists and distributors. La gazza ladra (Italian pronunciation: [la ˈɡaddza ˈlaːdra], The Thieving Magpie) is a melodramma or opera semiseria in two acts by Gioachino Rossini, with a libretto by Giovanni Gherardini based on La pie voleuse by Jean-Marie-Theodor Badouin d'Aubigny and Louis-Charles Caigniez. The composer Giaochino Rossini wrote quickly, and La gazza ladra was no exception. According to legend, before the first performance of the opera, the producer assured the composition of the overture by locking Rossini in a room, from the window of which the composer threw out the sheets of music to the copyists who then wrote the orchestral parts, to complete the composition of the opera. As such, The Thieving Magpie is best known for the overture, which is musically notable for its use of snare drums. The unique inspiration in the melodies is extreme, famously used to bizarre and dramatic effect in Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange. This memorable section in Rossini's overture invokes the image of the opera's main subject: a clever, devilishly thieving magpie.

Gioachino Rossini - 8 Famous Overtures (1810-17)

Gioachino Antonio Rossini (29 February 1792 – 13 November 1868) was an Italian composer who gained fame for his 39 operas, although he also wrote many songs, some chamber music and piano pieces, and some sacred music. He set new standards for both comic and serious opera before retiring from large-scale composition while still in his thirties, at the height of his popularity. The Sinfonia (overture) of the Barber of Seville was originally composed in 1813 for Aureliano in Palmira, then employed for the 1815 premiere of Elisabetta, regina d'Inghilterra in Naples before being used for the present opera, which has been its chief association ever since. The Barber of Seville, or The Useless Precaution is an opera buffa in two acts with an Italian libretto by Cesare Sterbini. The libretto was based on Pierre Beaumarchais's French comedy Le Barbier de Séville (1775). The première of Rossini's opera (under the title Almaviva, o sia L'inutile precauzione) took place on 20 February 1816 at the Teatro Argentina, Rome, with designs by Angelo Toselli. 2. La scala di seta (The Silken Ladder or Die seidene Leiter) is an operatic farsa comica in one act to a libretto by Giuseppe Maria Foppa. It was first performed in Venice, Italy, at the Teatro San Moisè on 9 May 1812. The overture has been frequently recorded and continues to be featured in the modern concert repertoire. 3. Il turco in Italia (The Turk in Italy) is an opera in two acts. The Italian-language libretto was written by Felice Romani. It was a re-working of a libretto by Caterino Mazzolà set as an opera (with the same title) by the German composer Franz Seydelmann [de] in 1788. 4.

La cambiale di matrimonio (also: The Bill of Marriage, or: The Marriage Contract) was the first of Rossini's operas to be performed. The youthful musician had composed it in only a few days at the tender age of 18. The premiere of the farsa comica in one act took place on November 3, 1810 at the Teatro San Moisè in Venice. The libretto of the opera buffa was written by Gaetano Rossi (1774 - 1855) and is based on a comedy by Camillo Federici (1749 - 1802) and an earlier opera libretto on the same material. The comedy, set among the merchant classes, is bursting with wordplay and applications of merchant language to the marriage theme. The rich merchant Tobia Mill plans to marry off his only daughter Fanny to his Canadian business partner Slook. Fanny is basically going to be bartered away to Slook like a commodity. She, however, loves poor Edward Milfort and plans to marry him. She is outraged by her father's behavior and rejects Slook directly and unequivocally. Slook, on the other hand, acknowledges the love of the two young people and assigns to Edward the marriage contract by which Mill intended to sell his daughter to Slook as a wife. He also names Edward as his heir. Mill at first stubbornly resists this happy turn of events, but in the end he is convinced by all parties involved – and so the grotesque story finds its happy ending.
