Inside Ukraine's Chernobyl site after Russian occupation - BBC News

The site of the former nuclear power plant at Chernobyl is back under Ukrainian control after being occupied by Russian troops on the first day of the war. The BBC's Yogita Limaye was one of the first journalists to reach the site, north of the capital Kyiv, and spoke to some of the people who work there. For several days, Russian forces cut off electricity at the plant, which was the site of the world's worst nuclear disaster in 1986. About 170 Ukrainian national guards who secured the plant were taken to the basement and held captive there during the occupation. Please subscribe HERE 🤍 #Ukraine #Russia #BBCNews

Ukraine stages firing drills in Chernobyl zone, close to Belarus border

Ukraine’s armed forced conducted military drills on Friday (February 3) in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, next to the border with Belarus. Drills involved Soviet-era self-propelled howitzers called 2S3 Akatsiya and were aimed at increasing troops readiness in case of another Russian assault from the territory of Belarus. As snow fell, servicemen fire howitzers and rifles in the 30-km exclusion zone around defunct nuclear power plant. See troubling discoveries inside Chernobyl after Russians fled

CNN's Fred Pleitgen visits the abandoned Russian military positions in Chernobyl where Russian soldiers went into the Red Forest, the most nuclear contaminated area on the planet, and brought back radioactive dust. Ukrainians shocked by 'crazy' scene at Chernobyl after Russian pullout reveals radioactive contamination Chernobyl, Ukraine (CNN)The sudden ear-piercing beep of a radiation meter fills the room as a Ukrainian soldier walks in. This is where Russian soldiers were living at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, and radiation levels are now higher than normal. There's no visible presence of the source of the radioactive material in the room, but Ukrainian officials say it's coming from small particles and dust that the soldiers brought into the building. "They went to the Red Forest and brought radioactive material back with them on their shoes," soldier Ihor Ugolkov explains. "Other places are fine, but radiation increased here, because they were living here." CNN was given exclusive access to the power plant for the first time since it came back into Ukrainian control. Officials at the plant explain the levels inside the room used by Russian soldiers are only slightly above what the World Nuclear Association describes as naturally occurring radiation. One-time contact would not be dangerous but continuous exposure would pose a health hazard. "They went everywhere, and they also took some radioactive dust on them [when they left]," Ugolkov adds. It's an example of what Ukrainian officials say was the lax and careless behavior of Russian soldiers while they were in control of the site of the 1986 nuclear disaster. The area around Chernobyl, namely the Red Forest, is still the most nuclear contaminated area on the planet, with most of the radioactive particles present on the soil. Read more at: 🤍

Chernobyl's 1986 disaster

On 26 April 1986, it was decided at Chernobyl to take advantage of reactor number four's downtime by carrying out a safety test on an emergency core cooling feature. At 1.24 am, an engineer recorded in his diary that the protective system was not working. At the same moment, a huge and catastrophic surge in power caused two explosions. As fires raged, the core of reactor number four was destroyed. A huge cloud rose into the sky, spreading large amounts of radioactive fuel and materials into the atmosphere. Ukrainian Singer Performs in Chernobyl Nuclear Plant

The lead singer of the popular Ukrainian band Okean Elzy staged a solo performance for workers at the Chernobyl nuclear power station, May 13, 2022. Sviatoslav Vakarchuk sang and played guitar as he sat in protective white clothes in front of a huge bank of controls inside the notorious facility. In April 1986 the plant's fourth reactor exploded during a botched safety test, sending clouds of radiation billowing across much of Europe. The plant, which is still radioactive, lies about 100 kilometers from Kyiv. In February this year invading Russian forces captured it, but it was later retaken by Ukraine. Compilation of Rare 1986 Videos of Chernobyl Disaster. (English)

The recorded phone call between the Firefighter HQ and the fire departments was uploaded to youtube by Andriy Pryymachenko, who also made supporting text animation of the call. The original video is located at this address: "The scariest phone call of the 20th century" 🤍 - On April 26, 2016, Ukraine marked the sad 30th anniversary of the Chornobyl nuclear disaster. The Chernobyl disaster was a catastrophic nuclear accident that occurred on 26 April 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the city of Pripyat, then located in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic of the Soviet Union (USSR). An explosion and fire released large quantities of radioactive particles into the atmosphere, which spread over much of the western USSR and Europe. 🤍 Moscow tried to hide the disaster for 2 days before finally admitting the accident. Evacuation began long before the accident was publicly known throughout the Union. Only on 28 April, after radiation levels set off alarms at the Forsmark Nuclear Power Plant in Sweden, over 1,000 kilometres (620 mi) from the Chernobyl Plant, did the Soviet Union publicly admit that an accident had occurred. At 21:02 that evening a 20-second announcement was read in the TV news program Vremya: There has been an accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. One of the nuclear reactors was damaged. The effects of the accident are being remedied. Assistance has been provided for any affected people. An investigative commission has been set up. — Vremya, 28 April 1986 (21:00) This was the entirety of the announcement of the accident. The nearby city of Pripyat was not immediately evacuated. The townspeople went about their usual business, completely oblivious to what had just happened. By 11:00 on 27 April, buses had arrived in Pripyat to start the evacuation. Thirty-one deaths are directly attributed to the accident, all among the reactor staff and emergency workers. An UNSCEAR report places the total confirmed deaths from radiation at 64 as of 2008. The Chernobyl Forum predicts the eventual death toll could reach 4,000 among those exposed to the highest levels of radiation (200,000 emergency workers, 116,000 evacuees and 270,000 residents of the most contaminated areas). The soundtrack is "Ethnicolor 1" by Jean Michel Jarre. 🤍

Moving to Chernobyl - Embracing radiation to escape war | DW Documentary

In 2014 they fled the war in the east of Ukraine, resettling near the exclusion zone around Chernobyl. Vadim Minsyuk from Donetsk and Yuri Andreyev from Luhansk chose to move their families to the site of the 1986 nuclear disaster, all to escape the war. Living with the risk of radiation is better than staying in a war zone, that’s the firm conviction of both men. Since the fighting broke out in eastern Ukraine, more than 1.5 million people have fled the self-proclaimed republics of Donetsk and Luhansk, moving to various parts of the country. Some have ended up in the one place that most people would do everything to avoid: Chernobyl. Vadim Minsyuk and Yuri Andreyev are among those seeking to build a new life at the heart of the radioactive cloud that descended after the reactor explosion on April 26th, 1986. Fields, forests and roads were all contaminated with dangerous levels of strontium and cesium. Near the exclusion zone around Chernobyl, Vadim Minsyuk is now building up his new company. He turns slag, a byproduct of smelting ore, into metal, and earns a modest living. Before the war, he and his wife ran a successful business with revenues running into the millions. Yuri Andreyev ran a successful farm. He spent over 200 days in captivity, held by the separatists. Now he’s once again earning a living from farming, growing sunflowers and food crops. But his farm is also next to Chernobyl’s exclusion zone. He insists his produce is not contaminated, saying he had all his fields inspected. Because of the relatively short half-lives of cesium and strontium, radiation has indeed decreased over time, says Valery Kashparov, Director of the Ukrainian Institute of Agricultural Radiology. But he says soil contamination could still pose a health risk in some areas. Nevertheless, Kashparov is convinced that the area is ready for a new start. Those affected by the war could be the very catalyst that’s needed. #documentary #dwdocumentary #Chernobyl DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. Russian military claims Chernobyl nuclear plant under joint protection with Ukrainian forces

Russian forces seized control of Chernobyl on February 25, a day after the start of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
