Fish has released his brand new single ‘Garden Of Remembrance’, the latest song to be taken from his highly anticipated final solo album Weltschmerz, which will be released on September 25th. Pre-order here: 🤍 For all digital options order here: 🤍 Video directed by David Lam & Hannah Thompson 🤍 🤍 ‘Garden Of Remembrance’ is a beautifully moving and personal song from the Scottish singer, and stands as the album’s most poignant and personal moment; a gorgeous piano ballad wrapped in a stirring arrangement that showcases one of the best vocal performances of Fish’s long and illustrious career. With an ever-increasing awareness of old age and its associated illnesses through the death of his father in 2016, and his elderly mother moving into care with Fish and his wife in January 2019, he was presented with a touchstone for the lyrics of the song. The aptly titled ‘Garden Of Remembrance’ tells the story of a married couple dealing with the early onset of dementia and the resulting issues of a husband who's "Lost between the here and now/Somewhere that he can’t be found” and his wife. With such a delicate and deeply touching subject matter the emotional delivery borders on heart wrenching, with Fish’s superbly spellbinding and fragile performance. Lyrically, he has dared to enter a very dark personal space where most of us fear to tread and has managed to convey a deep beauty that celebrates life in the fading light of days. “The song was put together as though we were painting a delicate piece of Royal Doulton china,” comments Fish. To complement the brave and deeply honest song, its accompanying video is equally exceptional. Directed by David Lam and Hannah Thompson (daughter of Fish’s long term collaborator and illustrator Mark Wilkinson), the outdoor shots were filmed at daybreak during lockdown on a deserted beach, a glass wall separating the couple, who at one point are very briefly reunited. Fish's intense performance, seated alone in an art gallery lined by artwork from his career, is focused directly on the camera where he allowed his raw emotion to take hold during the filming, resulting in a genuine tear at a crucial moment. “The video involved a complicated approach as the whole country went into lockdown just as we were due to start filming,” explains Fish. “I had to be filmed in front of a white screen in my home and then the gallery around me was created as a miniature 3-D model into which I was magically transported. Meanwhile the couple were filmed on an Essex beach, rather than in Scotland as intended and the gigantic glass wall across the beach was intended to symbolise the separation of the couple. However it came to take on another meaning as lockdown separated families across the country. “I was very aware of my mother in her room only 15 metres away and, although not on camera, I felt her presence intensely during the performance. My wife's hand on my shoulders at the end of the video added to the emotional dynamic, drawing together yet another circle within the story.” The new single is taken from the brand new double album Weltschmerz, marking Fish’s eleventh – and final – studio recording. It is an extraordinary piece of work that brings down the curtain on this phase of the Scotsman’s successful career. But whilst Weltschmerz emits a certain air of finality and closure, it is not a depressing record. Besides bringing us Fish’s finest set of lyrics to date, Weltschmerz is also his most adventurous and varied piece of work. It will stand as a remarkable achievement, a truly magnificent end to his recording career of over 40 years – during which he has sold millions of records both as the frontman of Marillion and throughout his three decades as a solo artist. The 84-minute double album is available to preorder now from 🤍 in multiple formats including double digipak CD with 16 page booklet and as a gatefold 180-gram double vinyl.

Official video. More Fish at 🤍 I wrote this song in 1990 with Frank Usher, Mickey Simmonds and Robin Boult and it was originally on the “Internal Exile” album . The lyric had originally been intended for a duet with Moya Brennan with her band Clannad and I spent a fruitless couple of days at Rockfield studios with them in late 1988 trying to put something together with my original lyric idea when I was still living down South and part of Marillion. Moya and Clannad loved the lyric I had back then but we couldn’t get it together mainly because we spent too much time in the pub and the work schedules were an afterthought. Nobody got into the studio till late afternoon and then it was dinner then back to the pub and late, late writing sessions that achieved little. We mutually gave up on the idea and I headed back home to a band that was fast fragmenting and whom I’d leave a few weeks later. It was too late to even suggest it as a lyric for a Marilion song and was probably wrong for us then anyway as I always knew it needed a slight country and western approach musically and for that reason it never made the “Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors” album either as I felt it didn’t fit with the other lyrical ideas. The lyric stayed in my little black book until I was inspired to take it out and re write for the “Exile” sessions. It wasn’t until Frank came up with the main riff that everything clicked into place and personal circumstances leant the song an edge and a feel that I knew was right for me to sing with conviction. The “Exile” album had a lot of different song writing styles as I was facing my “difficult second” solo album having used up a lot of material on “Vigil” that had been intended for the Marillion album that never happened. It could handle the inclusion of a song with a country vibe. My producer Chris Kimsey and I wanted to go with it as a duet and a number of people were suggested including Kate Bush ( who my manager at the time, John Cavanagh ,as a former EMI executive knew well) and Tori Amos. In short we ran out of time as people didn’t get back to us and I think between my ugly exit from EMI and the Kate Bush/ Peter Gabriel connection that avenue was more of a dream than a reality. The song was therefore originally recorded just with female backing vocals rather than as a fully-fledged duet. In 95 when I decided to re-record some tracks from “Exile” for the “best of” “Yin/ Yang “albums the opportunity to re-examine the idea of a duet. The first person I thought of was Sam Brown who’d just finished the Pink Floyd tour on which she had been singing backing vocals to brilliant effect and I’d loved what she did on their live “Pulse “album. I’d met Sam at a few gigs and events and I contacted her manager who was up for the idea. She arrived at the studio to work with my producer James Cassidy and we were slightly worried as she was in the latter stages of pregnancy with her second child. She was fantastic to work with and her great sense of humour allayed all our fears as she continually wound us up about her water’s breaking during the sessions. I don’t think I ever laughed so much during a recording although sometimes nervously! :-). When it came to shooting the single cover and the video she was breast feeding her recently born child and despite all the demands of dealing with Mohan, her newborn child on set( and who's in the video) she got totally involved in the filming and gave her all. A total trooper and consummate professional she captivated everyone involved in the shoot and had us all laughing throughout the day. Filming down at Barnes Ness lighthouse near Torness nuclear power station in East Lothian was pretty dramatic as I saved all my pennies and invested in a helicopter hire for the shoot. It was a particularly windy day and we were all a bit nervous on the balcony on the top of the lighthouse. The helicopter made a few passing moves and flared up to the lighthouse at times a little too close for comfort. I thought the pilot was being pretty cool until we came down from the takes to find him white faced and slightly shaken up. I think that’s what we call a near miss!” he said to our disbelief! The single made a tiny dent on the charts and to be honest I was hugely disappointed as I really did believe we had a great chance of a hit with it. As usual a total lack of radio play killed it and I still think it is a hit song that should have been but never was. It’s probably the most fun video I was ever involved with and it really did become a party at the end!
Official music video. Credo was the second single, released in December 1991 from "Internal Exile", my second solo album released a few months earlier. The lyrical idea was again a hangover from the Dalnaglar sessions with Marillion in '88 but didn't really come into shape until early '91 soon after the birth of my daughter Tara on January 1st who I can remember cradling in my arms while watching the "shock and awe" of the first Gulf War explode on my TV screen and wondering just what kind of world I had introduced her into. There was a lot of anger in me at that time after a debilitating and expensive legal battle with EMI records that wouldn't conclude until April of that year combined with an ongoing court case with my former band members in Marillion over various financial and other issues. It was a difficult time and I had perhaps foolishly decided to build my own recording studio amongst all this confrontation and the immense drain on my finances in order to give me creative independence away from major labels I had been beholden to. The "Internal Exile" album was the first album to be recorded in my own studios with Chris Kimsey (Misplaced Childhood, Clutching at Straws) producing. As expected the writing sessions had been strained as I came to terms with my "difficult" second solo album during this insanely stressful period. I channelled my anger into the songs and tried to look outward rather than inward. The album became a mixed bag of song subject matters and styles as I was slightly overwhelmed by my freedom and at the same time searching for a new direction and identity. The album had the original title of "Internal Exile - a collection of a boys own stories" with the cover , designed by Mark Wilkinson, reflecting the composition of a book cover of the sort of compendium I used to be given at Christmas when I was younger. "Credo" was born from a certain feeling of helplessness and frustration after watching too much satellite television of a world in chaos. The religious allusion in the lyric harked back to a desperate last ditch dependence on prayer in the face of total adversity and what I knew in reality was the uselessness of it all. The line, "It don't mean nothing" in the lyric was inspired by a scene in the movie "Hamburger Hill" when soldiers created a mantra to deal with the pain of loss of a close comrade. With the first Gulf War raging it seemed apt! It was a question of faith to which I still don't have the answer.

This video has been uploaded for entertainment purposes only and is in accordance with fair use standards (section 107 of the U.S. Copyright. Act.).

Two days later my musicians and crew were disbanded and soon after in lockdown in their respective homes across the UK and beyond. None of us has set foot on a stage since and are unlikely to do so again for quite a while. Losing all our concert touring in 2020 has been both a huge emotional and financial hit for everyone concerned however I was lucky that, although I didn't qualify for government support, my wife and I had the record company mail order business to get us through the year. My musicians and crew haven't been as fortunate and most of them being self employed qualified for only basic support, others getting nothing at all. The show on March 13th at the Lemon Tree in Aberdeen was essentially a warm up gig for a tour that was booked with around 50 shows throughout the year and across Europe. We wouldn't normally record these shows but luckily it was captured by my sound engineer Steve Kent and with a touch of studio magic from Steve Vantsis, my bass player, ‘Weltschmerz' album co-writer and co-producer, we've managed to get together an hour and 30 minutes of the only show performed in 2020. It's a very special memory and means a lot to us all. I decided that I didn't want to release it as an official live album but to use it in a very different way. Official music video. Internal Exile by Fish from the album Internal Exile. "I was inspired to write the lyric to this song in 1988 when I was in Scotland in residential writing sessions at Dalnaglar castle on the edge of the Scottish Highlands attempting to put together an album that would never happen with my then band Marillion. It was the first time since 81 when I joined the band that I'd spent longer than a few days in Scotland and I was meeting and talking to a lot of old friends who reacquainted me with nationalist politics. At the time it was a period of turbulence and passion as Margaret Thatcher was in power and Scotland was designated as the testing ground for the newly proposed controversial Poll Tax after having fatally damaged the coalmining, shipbuilding and steel making industries in previous years. I was caught up in the fervour and on moving back to Scotland in late 1988 I found my writing strongly influenced by the situation developing around me. The song was completed in the Summer of 1989 and although recorded for my first solo album "Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors" was held back and rerecorded to become the title track of my second album released in 1991. At this same time the SNP were putting together a concerted campaign that had a conservative government, now under John Major worried about the forthcoming election in April 92. "Internal Exile" was released as a lead single on the 9th September 1991 and alienated some of my fan base and the general media who saw the song as too political and a minority construing it as "anti English" which it was never intended to be. It was and is a pro Scottish song and I stand by these lyrics to this day. The song didn't receive much airpay at the time either North or South of the Border and I was told it was unofficially banned on some stations because of the sentiments. In 1992 the hoped for swing from the Labour vote to the SNP didn't happen the Conservatives triumphed and John Major was again Prime Minister. Nothing changed. I don't expect it to get much airplay these days either but as a song that illustrated my personal feelings then and my opinion now, neither of which have changed over the last 13 years and more, I thought I would put this clip up on You Tube for the first time at the same time as my official statement on my stance on the independence referendum is released."
