NAS Brands in 2021 – Which One Should You Choose? 🤍 Buying your first Network Attached Storage (NAS) device can be a remarkably daunting task! Even for the most technologically knowledgable, a NAS is a very different kind of device than most of the hardware in your environment. At its heart, it is just a computer (like most things are when you break them down to the basics) that is built for a specific task. However, there are numerous elements of a NAS (such as it always being ON, the constant remote accessibility and focus on storage primarily) that set it apart from most other devices, and this IS where a lot of people get a bit intimidated by it. There is always the option of using cloud services, such as DropBox, Google Drive, OneDrive and more, but these are often paid monthly subscription services, involve your data being shared across other services and (most worrying of all) leaves your precious data in a position to be used for analytics without your knowledge OR open to hacking because of the sheer size of the target. Add to this the fact that in most cases, a severed connection to the internet means a severed connection to your data, and the appeal of moving away from 3rd party cloud and on to a NAS is pretty clear. The industry of NAS has been in constant growth for over 30 years, with big players like HP, Dell and IBM steadily losing the home and SMB market to the likes of Synology, QNAP and more. The brand diversity in the field of NAS servers has continued to grow right up until 2021, with the benefit that the way you can interact with your data, what NAS devices can do and the price point of this technology being exceedingly affordable (with fully featured solutions WITH storage media arriving as low as £200). So, today I want to talk about what NAS is, what a NAS can do, and which NAS Brand you should consider buying in 2021. This description contains links to and Amazon. WD Red 8TB vs. Seagate IronWolf 8TB: NAS hard disk operating noise comparison on Synology DS118

NAS hard drive sound level and sound spectrum comparison: Which HDD is quieter for a 1 bay home NAS? TL;DR: The Seagate IronWolf 8TB hard drive that I’ve tested had a distinct read/write head sound when operating (read/write), while the tested WD Red 8TB hard drive was a bit quieter and more unobtrusive in direct comparison. However, both NAS hard drives are not as quiet as I would like to have for home environments. I have tested two 8TB hard disks on a Synology DiskStation DS118, the WD Red NAS Hard Drive (Western Digital) as well as the IronWolf NAS Hard Drive (Seagate). Both drives seem to be a good choice when it comes to set up a network-attached storage or home cloud. But which one operates quieter? Although there is some information available about acoustics of both hard drives, I have so far been unable to find any truly helpful information for home users. Therefore I decided to try both, the WD Red and the IronWolf HDD in order to find out which product is perceived as quieter at my home. It is important to mention that acoustic characteristics of hard drives can be inconsistent across a particular product line, depending on the capacity of the drive. This means that a WD Red drive with 4TB capacity may sound differently in comparison to the 10TB version of the same product line. This may also apply for IronWolf drives. In addition to that, both manufacturers offer “pro“ line hard drives which I did not consider for my home NAS and which likely have different operating noise compared to the non-pro drives. Check the specs of each model! This subjective and non-scientific comparison only applies to exactly these two NAS hard drive products: - WD Red 8TB (model WD80EFAX), made in Thailand Nov 2019 - Seagate IronWolf 8TB (model ST800VN004), made in China Jun 2019 Keep in mind that the NAS housing also influences the acoustics. I used the Synology DiskStation DS118. The hard drives as well as the NAS were brand new when testing. The NAS’ fan speed was set to Quiet Mode. I have recorded the audio tracks using my iPhone XS, which was positioned centered next to the NAS. The iPhone and its microphone did not have a solid connection to the NAS (only the air in between) and it was placed at a distance of approx. one phone length to the NAS. I haven't made any changes to the sound recordings. Due to the proximity of the microphone to the NAS, operating noise of higher frequencies sounds more pronounced than I experienced in real life. Please watch the video in order to compare the operating noise of both hard drives when using my Synology DS118 NAS (reading/copying approx. 800MB of some music files via SMB, same for both hard disks). I’d like to share what I found out for me: - In general, the WD Red 8TB seems to operate a bit quieter than the IronWolf 8TB, at least when actually working (read/write operations) - R/W operating noise of IronWolf 8TB sounds a bit louder, more punchy, and darker. But its read/write noise only covers a very specific, narrow sound spectrum (only up to approx. 1.5 kHz, with a peak volume at around 750 Hz). - R/W operating noise of WD Red is quieter, less punchy but spread across a broader sound spectrum (mainly up to 900 Hz and again in between 5 to 6.5 kHz). - Interestingly, only when idle (but spinning) the IronWolf seems to be a bit less noticeable and quieter than the WD Red (when spinning idle) which emits some sort of extra hum. Summary: - When it comes to idle spinning, the IronWolf 8TB emitted less hum and can be considered a bit quieter, even if spinning faster than the WD Red 8TB. - With regards to actual operation (read/write), the WD Red 8TB was quieter and produced less pronounced read/write head sounds than the IronWolf 8TB. - I personally experienced that the WD Red 8TB was overall quieter and more unobtrusive in my DS118 NAS than the IronWolf 8TB.

8 old MFM Hard Disk Drives are here presented to listen nicely to the nice retro sound of spinning up and the moving heads during benchmark. These beasts sounds like jet engines and this was the sound we were used to in old computers. A must for a retrolover today too. Following MFM Hard Disk are shown in this video: Quantum Q540 Miniscribe 3425 NEC D5126 Fujitsu M2243AS2 Magnetic Pheripherals 94205-053 Seagate ST-251 MLC1 NED D5146H IBM Type 2 Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed the sound too like I do ;-) Contact me for anything you want to tell me.

Why Is Your Hard Drive Beeping?

You may try to boot up your computer one day, only to be met with an error message telling you that your computer cannot find a device to boot from. You pull out the hard drive, and when you try to power it on your worst fears are confirmed. The hard drive doesn’t spin up. You can’t hear the happy “click” that comes when the read/write heads unpark and position themselves over the platters (this is the “good” click, as opposed to the notorious “click of death”). Instead, your hard drive makes an unusual and repetitive beeping noise. Read more: 🤍 🤍

🤍 Let's get Right to Repair passed! 🤍 👉 🤍 👉 🤍 To be clear, for the end of the video: most of these jobs are in the $450-$1500 range depending on whether the old heads are salvageable and how difficult your case ends up being. Few if any wind up being $200. Steve made a mistake here by mentioning that he discounted a very simple case to $200, because as a result, we have been accused of being dishonest in other cases. Over the past year we were buried under hard drives, and the costs of expanding to a new facility & training new staff don't allow us to do this for $200 anymore. So in the interest of honesty & transparency - please email or check our website to understand the prices we are charging at any time, as they are subject to change, and on your case.

Just a quick video this week as I'm not feel the best. I recently picked up a new computer namely the HM Systems Minstrel Workstation. This machine is build around a 286 16mhz CPU with 1mb of RAM, a 1.44mb floppy drive and one very noisy hardware. Music is from the Lotus III pc speaker sound track. Like, subscribe and comment. We will be back to our usual fair next week when we will be starting into an Amiga Arcade all in one thing... You'll understand when you see it.

Are you getting crazy because your hard disk drive is making itchy chirping/clicking noises every few minutes? Newer HDD models try to be smart and park their heads every few minutes (or seconds with Western Digital) to spin down the platters to safe energy. The problem is, Windows (and probably other OS) are accessing drives all the time even when you are not, resulting them to spin up again ...just to park their heads a few minutes later again. This procedure is contra-productive for the lifespan of the HDD (SMART C1 Load Cycle Count is increasing rapidly) AND results in a chirping noise that I personally can't stand - I like silence. Maybe you heard about fixing this problem by disabling APM in CristalDiskInfo or similar. For some drives this may work, but mostly it's just a temporary fix until next reboot. If you got a Western Digital drive you may want to use WDiDLE3 (🤍 to fix it permanently. But since you're here you probably tried that stuff out already or/and don't have a WD drive but something else, like a SEAGATE. * This video tutorial explains how to disable APM _permanently_ in the DCO of your hard disk drive * WHAT YOU NEED: - HDAT2 (🤍) - A USB flash drive or a CD-R/W (and recorder) or a Floppy Disk (...) - A hotswap bay for the HDD or just an open case to plug cables in/out - The pesky hard disk drive :) HOW TO: - Copy HDAT2 to a bootable media - Set your SATA controller to IDE mode (BIOS/UEFI) [AHCI works as well since v6.0] - Boot from your HDAT2 media (and run the exe file) - In case the DCO of your HDD is frozen: Unplug the power cable and re-attach it - Re-detect the HDD by pressing D - Select the HDD - | Commands menu - || Command/Feature sets - ||| Advanced Power Management (APM) feature set - Confirm with Y - Disable APM by pressing D - | Device Configuration (DCO) menu - || Modify - Press S - Confirm with Y That's it. Enjoy your quiet HDD! Music by Purple Motion (c) 1993 - A legend.

A long time ago (about 20 years at least) buying hard drives was much easier, as the technology was significantly less evolved. The difference between one hard drive and another could be the capacity, physical, size or the interface - that is about it! But much like any other kind of technology, over time hardware designers were able to improve it, make it more efficient, increase the storage, speed up the access and all the while sticking with the same 3.5" physical scale. The result of all this development was that tailored/designed drives arrived that were geared internally towards specific tasks (thereby allowing designers to focus the HDDs development towards one specialization more than others). Fast forward to 2022/2023 and you find that the HDD market is considerably more diverse and brands have much more layered portfolios of drives and one big, BIG area of hard disk development was with NAS/Server HDD media. These are drives that are designed to be on 24x7, be prepared to spin up very quickly with little notice, be better suited to being deployed in larger quantities together (i.e RAID configurations made up of many drives) and all the while combating vibration and increased temperatures to maintain a healthy and stable level of use at all times. Today I want to look at three hard drives that are designed for large-scale NAS deployment (such as 8-24-bay rackmount and 8-12+ bays desktop NAS systems), as all three are the current popular choice for this kind of NAS system. There are the long-established HDD vendor drives, the WD Red Pro series and Seagate Ironwolf Pro range, and there is the NAS-brand labelled Synology HAT5300 series (built on Toshiba MG06/06/08 Enterprise series, but with Synology firmware in services included). With a new generation of NAS Hardware arriving from Synology in 2022/2023, as well as a change in support and compatibility listings by the brand in several of their releases, now is a very good time to take a look at how these three NAS HDDs compare in design, utility, performance and value. With WD and Seagate having a considerable amount of history in their Red Pro and Ironwolf Pro ranges respectively in the NAS industry, many users are still unsure about the Synology HAT5300 and whether they should make the switch, design its shift in architecture towards a more enterprise build (arguable closer to Ultrastar and Seagate EXOs, than Red or Ironwolf). Let's take a closer look at these three drives and hopefully help you decide which one deserves your data!
