Lake Karachay: The Most Polluted Place in the World

Chernobyl and Fukushima are often dubbed as the worst nuclear disasters in world history. However, there is actually one catastrophe worse than these two disasters, at least by some metrics. This is Lake Karachay and standing beside it for more than one hour will kill you. Thank you so much for watching #nuclear #disaster #lake #russia #ussr #stalin

Inside Russia's Hidden Nuclear City

Ozersk is a hidden city within the vast forests of Russia’s Ural Mountains. For decades it was kept a secret and its citizens were cut off from the rest of the world. While we now know of its existence, it’s still heavily guarded and fenced-in with barbed wire, with no foreigners or visitors allowed to enter without permission from Russia’s secret police. However, not many people do want to visit Ozersk, also called City 40, is one of the most radioactively polluted places on the planet. The city has perfect tree-lined streets, big buildings, spacious apartments and businesses, but food has to be checked for radiation and it’s surrounded by two of the most polluted lakes in the world. One is even called Plutonium Lake, while the other, Lake Karachay, is now a bed of radioactive dust. It’s all because of the Mayak nuclear power plant and the Kyshtym disaster the third largest nuclear disaster in the world that rivaled the damage done by Chernobyl. So why then is the city still home to over 100,000 citizens? They are afforded luxury here that they can’t get elsewhere, and their loved ones are buried in Ozersk’s cemetery. It’s enough to convince them that living in “the graveyard of the Earth” is worth it. Today, Mayak still produces nuclear components and Russia stores it’s multi-billion dollar stockpile of nuclear weapons near the city hence all the armed guards and security cameras. So, hit play, and let’s explore Russia’s secret nuclear city. Lake Karachay was considered the most radioactive place on earth 1hr on edge would kill you, with more than 2.5 time the amount of radiation released from Chernobyl. This was radioactive material from the Mayak Nuclear plant. In the late 1980's they decided to fill it in after a drought in 1966 allowed the dust to contaminate over 40,000 people

Inside One of the Most Radioactive Places on Earth: Russian Road Trip (Part 3/3)

In the northeast region of Kazakhstan, near the Russian border, sits a stretch of land where the Soviet Union spent years testing the atomic bomb. During the Cold War, the government conducted more than 400 nuclear tests at a compound known as the "Polygon" in Semipalatinsk, a city 200,000 people called home. In this three-part documentary, VICE’s Abdullah Saeed, Danielle Neftin, and Dina Rayzman take a road trip through Russia and into Kazakhstan to visit the Polygon and meet the people who still live in Semipalatinsk, despite its nuclear contamination and health risks. Along the way, the trio drinks vodka with Russian separatists and samples antler blood, before zipping on their protective suits and heading directly into one of the most radioactive spots on Earth. Russia’s Lake Karachay – The Most Contaminated Place on Earth

Although breathtakingly beautiful, Russia’s Lake Karachay is probably the last place on earth you’d want to choose for a lakeside retreat. Just standing next to the picturesque shore for an hour would give you a radiation dose of 600 roentgen, more than enough to kill you. At its height, the lake was putting out more than 200,000 times the normal amount of radioactivity, due to poor waste disposal practices. Nestled deep in Russia’s Ural Mountains, close to the modern Kazakhstan border, Lake Karachay falls within the Mayak Production Association, one of the country’s largest (and leakiest) nuclear facilities. Built in the 1940s, immediately after World War II, Mayak was one of Russia’s most important nuclear weapons factories and was inaccessible to foreigners for 45 years. But when President Boris Yeltsin signed a decree in 1992 that opened up the area, visiting scientists who gained access immediately declared it the most polluted area on the planet. It seems that in its long period of obscurity, Mayak was the site of numerous nuclear-related accidents, some almost as devastating as the Chernobyl meltdown. Nuclear engineers at Mayak apparently dumped radioactive waste into the nearby Techa river quite regularly. The watered down waste that they discarded rather carelessly was a mixture of radioactive elements such as Strontium-90 and Cesium-137, each with a half-life of approximately 30 years.

This Lake Is deadlier Than Chenobyl! | Lake Karachay | Ways To Die

There's a gazillion ways to die! They may be dumb ways to die or not. You might even die in a fire. Or this; The race for nuclear weapons in the 1940s gave us great knowledge and great disaster! During that time, the Soviet Union built a secret nuclear factory called Mayak to produce weapons-grade plutonium. Unfortunately, their highly radioactive nuclear waste was disposed of carelessly; stored in leaky containment tanks or simply dumped into lake karachay. This led to the rise of the most dangerous lake in the world. Spending even less than an hour in this lake, will bathe your blood with a lethal dose of radiation! The effects? For workers and residents living around that area: there's a 21% increase in cancer cases, a25% increase in birth defects, and a 41% increase in leukemia. So if you decide to go to Russia for a vacation, best to keep away from the beautifully dangerous Lake Karachay. What a toxic story! Subscribe For New Videos! 🤍 Watch our "REAL Mermaid Sightings Around The World!" video here: 🤍 Watch our "10 Sea Monsters ATTACKING A Boat!" video here: 🤍 Watch our "STRANGEST Animals People Keep As Pets!" video here: 🤍 11. Tualatin River, USA Oregon’s Tualatin River is not the place to be if you want to take your dogs for a swim; close to a dozen dogs die there every year from exposure to toxic blue-green algae. A deadly form of bacteria, this algae can grow fast, quickly polluting a body of water into a deceptively pretty shade of turquoise. Those unfortunate enough to swallow the stuff can expect sickness and diarrhea at best, paralysis at worst. 10. Rio Tinto, Spain You might look at this water and think that something isn’t quite right. Deep red water is strange and is usually not a good sign. Probably anyone will think that something is not right when a river has deep red water. Rio Tinto (or Red River) is a highly acidic river with a pH of 1.7 – 2.5. This means the Rio Tinto is as strong as stomach acid and is more than powerful enough to any fish that dare swim in it. 9. Lake Kivu, Africa Lake Kivu is a shared resource between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It sits on a rift valley that is slowly being pulled apart, causing volcanic activity around the area. However, 300 meters (1,000 ft) below the surface of Lake Kivu lies a ticking time. Over 250 cubic kilometers (60 cubic miles) of carbon dioxide, along with around 65 cubic kilometers (15 cubic miles) of methane gas, lurks under this body of water, enough to provide electricity to several countries. 8. Jacob’s Well, USA Jacob’s Well is known to be one of the world’s most dangerous diving spots. The well is near Cypress Creek,in Texas and descends 9.1 meters vertically. If you go straight down you will reach the first chamber. Go further down and at an angle and you’ll reach the second chamber which is 24 meters below the surface. 7. Blackwater River, USA Too much water can be a bad thing, even if the water itself can’t hurt you, the power of nature can. Just ask the folks around Blackwater River in Virginia, who have seen the waters rise and attack far more than usual these past few years. After close to 60 years of normalcy, the Blackwater River has overflowed and flooded nearby towns six times in the past 10 years. 6. Citarum River, Indonesia The Citarum River plays an important role in the life of the people of West Java, however it is not doing well. In fact, it is known as the most polluted river in the world. And it’s all human’s fault. The place is so filled with non-biodegradable waste and harmful chemicals that it’s practically toxic. 5. Potomac River, USA Just outside Washington D.C., the Potomac River Gorge is a 14-mile stretch that extends from the Key Bridge in the District of Columbia north to the Great Falls of the Potomac. The gorge is a popular site for outdoor activities like kayaking, boating, fishing, and hiking enthusiasts. 4. The Blue Lagoon, UK In Derbyshire, UK, there is a lake with a beautiful turqouise color but this is utterly deceptive. It turns out it was a former quarry that was flooded and filled with calcium oxide. The famous “Blue Lagoon” looks beautiful and became a popular swimming spot for locals even though warning signs already stated the dangers it possesses. 3. Boiling Lake, Dominica The Boiling Lake in Dominica is not a lake at all but actually a flooded fumarole, which is a hole in the Earth’s crust. Located in the Morne Trois Pitons National Park, it is the world’s second largest hot spring and looks like it took its hotness to an entirely new level. Discovered in 1870, the water temperature along its edges is 82 to 92 degrees Celsius (180 to 197 degrees Fahrenheit). 2. The Rivers of Johannesburg, South Africa Catching E. coli is no fun under normal circumstances; now imagine you were literally swimming in the stuff. That’s the reality around various rivers in Johannesburg, South Africa, where the amount of E. coli bacteria in the water goes way beyond acceptable levels. Some areas, like the nearby Cheetah Bridge, host 240 times more E. coli than what experts consider healthy. 1. Lake Karachay, Russia Located in the southern Ural Mountains in eastern Russia, Lake Karachay has been described as the most radioactive body of water in the world. It could also be considered the most polluted place on the planet. Origins Explained is the place to be to find all the answers to your questions, from mysterious events and unsolved mysteries to everything there is to know about the world and its amazing animals!

Disaster worse than Chernobyl! "An hour spent at a Russian lake means death"

Karachay, a small lake in central Russia, located next to the Soviet plutonium production center, was considered the most contaminated site in the world between 1950 and 1960. In 1990, it was the only radioactive site on Earth that contained more radioactive material at its bottom than was produced by the Chernobyl disaster. 11 Most Terrifying Lakes on Earth

Lakes usually instill a feeling of calm and serenity with their clear water and light breezes. When you imagine a lake, the first thing that probably comes to mind is a calm pool of water where you can swim, sail, or just sit and enjoy the beauty. But are all lakes safe? Well, we don’t think you’ll wanna go anywhere near the lakes we’re gonna tell you about, let alone take a dip in their dangerous waters! Have you ever heard, for example, about the Boiling Lake? Located in Dominica’s Morne Trois Pitons National Park, this lake can reach temperatures of 197°F along the edges. One more really dangerous lake is located in Africa. Weather conditions over it change so rapidly and without any warning that even experienced sailors have no idea when to expect danger... And that’s because it was chosen as a dumping site for radioactive waste back in the 1950s. - Rakshastal is so salty that literally nothing can survive in its waters, and those who live in nearby villages consider it poisonous. - If there’s a really notorious lake on our planet, it’s definitely Lake Natron. First of all, the water can get as hot as 120°F, the red stuff is salt so it’s certainly not a freshwater lake, and its pH level is about 10.5. This makes it so alkaline that very few creatures can live in it. - There are lakes surrounded by lush forests and green pastures, and then there’s Horseshoe Lake that only has dead trees for hundreds of feet around. This lake is among the deadliest in the world because of its CO2 emissions. - Lake Nyos is one of the 3 explosive lakes we know about. Its CO2 deposits at the bottom are quite dangerous, and even the smallest earthquake can trigger their release. - Lake of the Ozarks located in central Missouri actually holds a dark secret: it’s downright poisonous! The concentration of E. coli bacteria in its water is so high that you can get sick just by swimming in it. - Lake Michigan isn’t as safe as you think. Its underwater currents can be so rapid that if you swim in it, you won’t even have time to react when something grabs you and pulls you into the watery depths. - Just like Lake Nyos, Kivu is an exploding lake and one of the It holds not only CO2 at its bottom but also about 1.94 trillion cubic feet of methane, an extremely explosive gas. - There’s nothing toxic, explosive, or extremely hot about the waters of Lake Champlain. How to Survive Lake Natron

Located in a remote region of Tanzania, in East Africa, Lake Natron is one of the most toxic places on Earth. Part of its toxicity is caused by the Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano, located on the lake’s southern coast. This active volcano expels a strange magma that's rich in sodium and potassium carbonate. It's known as natrocarbonatite, or natron. The magma flows into the water, making it extremely alkaline. And the desert's salty rain soaks into it. Unlike other lakes, Lake Natron’s water doesn’t run to the sea or other streams. Instead, it evaporates, and the sodium stays behind. This increases the lake's salinity, making it even more lethal. Most animals can’t survive these corrosive waters. If they fall in, they could die before touching the bottom of the lake. 00:00 Subscribe to How to Survive 00:15 The episode Transcript and sources: 🤍 Produced by the makers of What If.
