Lisbon is a vibrant capital city, located in western Portugal on the estuary of the Tagus River. As one of the oldest cities in western Europe, Lisbon has a rich, turbulent history. By the 15th century, the port of Lisbon became one of the most important in the world. But unfortunately, the city center was largely destroyed by an earthquake in 1755. Today, it has been reconstructed into a bustling modern city blended with traditional heritage. In this video, we highlight 10 awesome things to do in Lisbon: 10. Try the traditional food Things to try include: bacalhau à brás, pastéis de bacalhau, bifana, bifinhos com natas e cogumelos, ginjinha, pastéis de nata ☑️Book a food & wine walking tour: 🤍 9. Ride Tram 28 A 7km route connects Martim Moniz Square with Campo Ourique, while passing through Lisbon’s most historic districts. We recommend starting your journey at Campo Ourique and riding it until the end. 8. Experience Fado and the nightlife at Bairro Alto Fado is a traditional Portuguese music genre, known for its expressive and melancholic sound. Recommended bar: Tasca do Chico 7. Visit St. George’s Castle Castelo de São Jorge stands on top of the tallest hill in Lisbon and served for different purposes throughout history. Today, you can stroll around its garden and the towers or participate in a guided tour. ☑️ Skip the line with guide: 🤍 6. Take in one of the many viewpoints Lisbon's best viewpoints include: Santa Luzia, Portas do Sol, São Pedro de Alcântara, and Monte Agudo. 5. Explore the highlights of Belém There are a few things you can’t miss: Torre de Belém, Padrão dos Descobrimentos, Tropical Botanical Gardens, Pasteis de Belém bakery, and the Jerónimos Monastery. 4. Walk around the Alfama District Another great thing to do in Lisbon is to stroll around the Alfama District. This neighborhood was the only one to survive the 1775 earthquake, making it the oldest area of Lisbon. Its narrow cobbled streets give the city a unique character. 3. Go on a sunset cruise on the Tagus River During a two-hour sailing adventure you’ll pass under the iconic San Francisco-lookalike bridge and take in the views of the most impressive monuments in Belém and the historic center. ☑️ Book your sunset cruise with Enjoy Tagus: 🤍 2. Day trip to Sintra At number 2 we have a day trip to the charming town of Sintra. Highlights include the gardens and mansion of Quinta da Regaleira, the Castle of the Moors with its incredible views, and the colorful Pena Palace. 🎥 Learn more about Sintra as a day trip from Lisbon: 🤍 1. Tourist information on visiting Lisbon, Portugal. From what to do like visit Mosteiro do Jeronimos, having pasteis de Belem and eating like a king, but also what you should not do when you visit Lisbon. From scary taxi rides, seven hills you will walk up, and wondering why people are trying to sell you random stuff on the street, this is one of my favorite and most thorough city travel videos. After four years in Bali, I have started to take steps to find a new home and a new life. I've come to Lisbon to build a new life in Europe, hopefully find romance and enjoy a level of sophistication that I feel has been lacking from my experience in Bali. I've been in Lisbon so far just over a week and in this video I discuss why I chose Portugal as a destination to move to, what I love about it so far and some early observations on culture.

Lisbon’s historic soul is under threat from spiraling property prices and an influx of tourists. The city council initiative "Shops with History” is fighting to preserve traditional stores at risk of closure because of the real estate boom. Local historian and city council employee Sofia Tempero heads one of the teams set up by the council to save old stores - which she calls the city’s living memory. "I shop where my grandmother used to shop - for hand-made soap, tailor-made gloves... you can have dolls repaired here or have an iron door knob made according to an old design,” she says. Store owners have to meet rigorous requirements, if they want their shop to be identified as a "Shops with History”, or "Loja com Historía” - a label that protects store owners from eviction. The regulations mean that Tempero cannot save all of the shops under threat even if she would like to. In her work, she has come across some real treasures: a pharmacies that concocts perfumes according to client wishes, corner store owners who know what type of coffee blends their customers prefer and workshops tucked away in back alley that weave ribbons of all kinds to order. Many of these shops have been around for over a century. They are more than just businesses. In many of the city’s historic districts they are meeting places for the locals. But many locals are also being forced to move out. The rising numbers of tourists have brought prosperity, but they have also fueled international property speculation. It’s a race against time for Sofia Temprero and the historic shops initiative. DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. Located on the westernmost front of Continental Europe, Lisbon is the capital and the largest city of Portugal. It is also one of the oldest cities in the world, and the second-oldest European capital city (after Athens). In 1755 a massive earthquake, and subsequent tidal wave and fire, killed 40,000 and completely destroyed much of the Lisbon lower central districts. It’s an incredible food city. And recently we launched our first Devour Tour there - our Tastes & Traditions of Lisbon Food Tour. And to celebrate it, I decided to make a video along with Ellis Dixon, our wonderful local operations manager and Lisbon expert. Get ready, because this Lisbon food tour is delicious! So, where did we go? 1. Confeitaria Nacional: This place has been open since the early 1800s and it’s a fantastic place to start your day - a bica (espresso) and a pastry surrounded by gorgeous turn-of-the-century decor. 2. Ginjinha Sem Rival: I love this tiny little shop where you can get a bottle of Portugal’s famous cherry liqueur - and also take a shot of it at the bar. This place has been going since 1840! 3. O Trevo: You have to eat a bifana sandwich when you’re in Lisbon. It’s simple, but delicious - stewed pork, and then you douse it in piri piri sauce and yellow mustard. And this was the place Anthony Bourdain visited! 4. Casa Pereira: I love how this old shop smells like coffee, tea and chocolate. And the walls are lined with incredible bottles of port. So if you want to grab a bottle of port while in the city, this is your place! 5. Trobadores: This place is straight out of Game of Thrones. And despite seemingly a little tacky, it’s actually a place locals come to. You can drink mead (fermented honey) and grill chorizo sausage right at your table! 6. Bonjardim: Piri piri chicken is famous, and if you’re going to get it in Lisbon (and you should), this is the place! The chicken was so deliciously juicy, and the skin fabulously spicy. 7. O Gaiteiro: I love a good old school restaurant. And in Lisbon these tascas the best spots to order grilled fish: sardines, salt-cold and octopus. O Gaiteiro is a place we visit on Devour’s Lisbon food tour and it’s fantastic - great food, full of local clients. 8. Sol e Pesca: This former fishing shop still looks like… a fishing shop. Apart from the enormous display of canned fish. And please, don’t be afraid of canned fish - it can be absolutely delicious, and this is the place to try it! 9. Manteigaria: Custard tarts are everywhere in Lisbon, but not all custard tarts are created equal. These ones from Manteigaria have a wonderfully crispy and flaky pastry, and custard is like delicious molten lava. A plus, you can watch them making them through the glass window. Sintra is located 30 kms to the west of Lisbon, in the center of Portugal. Home to ancient castles, extravagant palaces, and beautiful natural scenery, Sintra is an absolute must-visit. In this video we’ll show you how to visit Sintra as a day trip from Lisbon, including how to get there and the highlights that you can’t miss. 🚂 Getting to Sintra from Lisbon The cheapest way to get to Sintra is by train. The train leaves from the Rossio Train Station in downtown Lisbon once or twice per hour. It takes about 45 mins to get to Sintra. We took the train at 9 AM, which allowed us enough time to visit the three main highlights. It is best to leave as early as possible, however, the castles only open their doors at 10 AM. Once you arrive at the train station, you will have many options to move around the town. You can either take a bus, a taxi, tuk tuk, or walk. 📍 Stop 1: Quinta da Regaleira How to get there: 30 mins walking / 10 mins by taxi / 434 bus to Sintra Town + walk another 12 mins Time needed: 2 hours Sitting at the outskirts of Sintra’s historic center, the Quinta da Regaleira is easily walkable from the train station. It takes about 30 mins to walk there and you have nice views of the town center, flowers, and the Sintra National Palace on the way. Quinta da Regaleira was mainly designed by the Italian architect Luigi Manini in the late 1800s and is a shockingly beautiful estate. You can walk around a romantic palace, chapel, and a lush park that features the famous Initiatic Well, grottoes, and towers. We found the gardens especially peaceful. We recommend visiting this spot first because it’s less touristic and you’ll find fewer crowds during the morning. 📍 Stop 2: Castelo dos Mouros How to get there: 16 mins by taxi / 434 bus from train station Time needed: 2 hours Located on a high rocky mountain above the town, the Moorish Castle is a spectacular site. To get here, we walked back to the train station and caught the 434 bus. With the bus ticket you can hop on and off as you please for the day. Alternatively, you can also take a tuk tuk or taxi from the center, which will save you more time at the ruins. The fortification itself was built in the 10th century during the time the Moors occupied the area. Its strategic position helped defend both the surrounding territory and the maritime access routes to the city of Lisbon. It is fun walking on the castle walls and taking in the unique views over the town and the Atlantic Ocean. 📍 Stop 3: Pena Palace How to get there: 3 mins by taxi / 15 mins walk Time needed: 2.5 hours For your last main stop of the day we recommend the famous Pena Palace and Park. It’s only a 15 mins walk from the Moorish Castle and it’s less crowded at the end of the day. This is the most famous attraction in all of Sintra for a good reason. The Palace stands in a 200 hectare park, filled with colorful flowers, small ponds, and beautiful viewpoints. Once you step inside the palace itself, you’ll be amazed by the blend of vibrant colors and beautiful architecture. You can also explore the interior and get an idea for the history of this palace, which once served as a holiday residence for the Portuguese royal family. ☑️ Book entrance ticket Pena Palaca: 🤍 ✨ BONUS acivity in Sintra revealed at the end of the video! ☑️ Guided tour of Pena & Regaleira: 🤍 🎦 Note: drone footage is courtesy of Canva ⬇️ FREE DOWNLOAD: Top 100 Bucket List Destinations: 🤍 ✅ SUBSCRIBE: 🤍 😊 FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA: 🤍 📺 MORE VIDEOS YOU WILL ENJOY: - Lisbon things to do: 🤍 - Porto things to do: 🤍 - 10 incredible places to visit in the Algarve: 🤍 - Lagos things to do: 🤍 - Portugal Top 15 Places to Visit: 🤍 ✍️ EASILY ORGANIZE YOUR TRIP WITH OUR TRAVEL PLANNER: Use code WORLD10 at checkout & get 10% OFF! 🤍 ✏️ SINTRA BLOG: Sintra As A Day Trip From Lisbon: 🤍 🎵 MUSIC CREDITS: Rejoice in the morning by The David Roy Collective Cynthias Song by Will Van De Crommert Seven Raindrops by Yonnie Dror The Finale by Francesco Dandrea Jennys Song by Tommy Jervidal 🎥 VIDEO CHAPTERS: 0:00 Intro 1:11 How To Get To Sintra 1:48 Quinta Da Regaleira 3:08 Castelo dos Mouros 4:15 Pena Palace 5:35 BONUS ACTIVITY #sintra #sintradaytrip #portugal

Lisbon was the final stop of our European tour and we couldn't have chosen a better destination. The city immediately won us over with it's cheery pastel buildings, delicious fresh seafood, and it's unique mix of attractions. It also didn't hurt that we had clear blue skies the whole week we were there! We also cover off-the-beaten-path activities that you won't find in your typical tourism brochure or Lisbon city guide. 20 things to do in Lisbon, Portugal | Top Attractions Travel Guide: Our first stop of the day was Sao Jorge Castle, which is an old Moorish fortification that sits on a hill overlooking Lisbon and the Tagus River. You can get some nice panoramic views of the city from here, and they also have peacocks roaming the grounds. Miradouro das Portas do Sol is one of the many look out points in Lisbon that offers postcard-perfect views of the city. This particular terrace overlooks the Alfama district and it is always popular with tourists. Carmo is a mediaeval convent that was ruined during the 1755 earthquake, and today it is used as an archaeological museum. It's a strange feeling walking down the ruined nave of the church and seeing blue skies above your head, but that's exactly what makes it worth a visit. Another place to visit is Belem Tower. The tower was built on the banks of the Tagus River, and it was meant to act as both a defense system and a ceremonial gateway into Lisbon. The Jeronimos Monastery is one of the most visited sights in Lisbon. It's one of the best examples of Late Gothic Manueline architecture, so have a close look at the intricate detailing when you visit. A fun way to get around Lisbon's hilly streets is by riding the trams. There are different lines across the city, but #28 is the most popular one with visitors. The Santa Justa lift is an elevator that connects the lower streets of Baixa with Carmo Square, and it is the only remaining vertical elevator in Lisbon. Though it is meant to serve a functional role, it is also quite popular with visitors who find the elevator a novel idea. And that's a wrap for our week in the Portuguese capital! We hope you enjoyed this video and that it gave you some ideas of things to do in Lisbon. As always, if you have any other suggestion for travellers of places to visit and things to do around town, feel free to share them in the comments below. Wishing you happy travels! ►For more delicious Portuguese food, check out my Lisbon Travel Guide: 🤍 ►Subscribe to my videos: 🤍 ►Camera I use: 🤍 On Day 27 in Lisbon, Portugal, I made up my mind to eat as much Portuguese food and at some of the best local restaurants in Lisbon. It turned out to be a fantastic day in Lisbon with some seriously good Portuguese food! 00:36 Cafe Martinho Da Arcada at Praça do Comércio - The first place we stopped in the morning is a legendary cafe in Lisbon that is the oldest cafe in Lisbon called Cafe Martinho Da Arcada. The main reason I wanted to go there was to try their pastéis de bacalhau, classic Portuguese food codfish fritters. The coffee and ambience and of the cafe was also nice. Total price - 9.30 EUR Restaurante Zé da Mouraria (I think it was closed for holidays) - I really wanted to eat at this restaurant during my visit to Lisbon, but unfortunately they were closed for holidays, so if you go to Lisbon and are looking for local Portuguese food, check this place out. 5:32 Restaurante Cantinho do Aziz - For our next meal, although not Portuguese food, but more Mozambican food, we headed over to Restaurante Cantinho do Aziz. The food was remarkable, one of the best meals I had in Lisbon. I first began with some beef samosas which were insanely good, and then had spicy bakra piri piri, spicy lamb ribs. Total price - 35.00 EUR 11:14 Restaurante A Merendinha do Arco - Finally, to try some authentic Portuguese food in Lisbon, we headed over to a restaurant called Restaurante A Merendinha do Arco. This small family run restaurant serves delicious Portuguese food and many of the classics. I ordered bacalhau com grão, codfish with garbanzo beans and carne de porco à alentejana, pork with clams. Along with the delicious local food, what I loved was the ambiance and feel of the restaurant. Total price - 20.15 EUR 22:10 Oceanário de Lisboa (Entrance price - 17 EUR per person) - By this point on this Portuguese food tour of Lisbon, I was feeling pretty full, so we headed over to Oceanário de Lisboa and walked around one of Europe’s biggest aquariums. 24:22 Cafe on Avenida da Liberdade (Coffee - 1.40 EUR) - One of the things I love about Lisbon is the social cafe culture and atmosphere. In the afternoon I was starting to feel pretty sleepy, so before dinner, I had a cup of coffee at an outdoor cafe along Avenida. 25:12 Solar dos Presuntos - For the last Portuguese meal in on this food tour of restaurants in Lisbon, I decided to eat at a restaurants called Solar dos Presuntos. I didn’t know it was going to be such a fancy high end restaurant, but it was our last night in Lisbon, so we decided to go for it. I started with the pata negra, a plate of incredibly good ham. Then I ordered the polvo à lagareiro, some of the most tender octopus I’ve ever had in my life. Finally we also ordered dourada grelhada - gilt-head sea bream fish. The food was expensive, but delicious. Total price - 60.85 EUR. This was a fantastic day of Portuguese food in Lisbon, and many of the places we ate today were the best restaurants I tried in Lisbon. We have arrived in Portugal for our family holiday & have 48 hours to explore this colourful city of Lisbon! Never used Airbnb before? Get $55 off your first night using this link: 🤍airbnb.com.au/c/sparry26 Our Airbnb we stayed at: 🤍 - First up we caught one of these crazy white tuk tuks up to Sao Jorge Castle to explore the medieval castle of Lisbon city but not before Mum decided to take too many selfies... Our bellies started to grumble and we were ready to try some local Portuguese food...a paella which we now realise is Spanish (haha, we will make this mistake up for you in a future video)! When we asked you what we should do and eat, a resounding support of the Pastel de Nata came through...you guys love your custard tarts...and to be honest we do too! Next stop is Praca do Comercial by the sea before moving onto the famous Pink street...which... well wasn't as pink as we thought it would be! We then stumbled upon a little street market that was selling Sangria and Pastel De Bacalhau which had an incredibly cool vibe to end our first day. Up bright and early we decided to beat the crowds and go at 7am to Santa Justa lift to find the best views of Lisbon city. Our biggest bucket list in Lisbon was to go to Bairro Alto to ride the old yellow trams :) After catching up with the family again we made our way to Pena Palace to end our unforgettable 2 days in this city...and wow this fairytale palace is a must see! - Where we get our incredible music from: 🤍 So Good by Lady Bri Horizons B Phillip Cuccias Together By Norman With Love By Analog Heart Falling in by Shawn Williams Gear we shot this video with - 🤍 SUBSCRIBE TO NEVER MISS AN EPISODE: 🤍 FLYING THE NEST: Website • 🤍 Facebook • 🤍 Twitter • 🤍 Snapchat • 🤍 STEPHEN: Instagram • 🤍 Twitter • 🤍 JESS: Instagram • 🤍 Twitter • 🤍 - Hi, we are Stephen & Jess, Australian vloggers documenting our first year of leaving home and travelling around the globe.
