This met with limited success, however things clicked when he added in the non vegetarian dishes that he and his wife would cook at home. Eventually, his sons joined in to support this family enterprise that in a span of 46 years has come to be the de facto eatery for naati (local style) non-vegetarian oota in the area. However, there are still many outside the immediate area who are yet to discover the homely taste of the fare here. I was one of them, until I paid a surprise visit one afternoon. In doing so, I caught up with the second and third generation of Chandrappa’s family and also his culinary legacy in a smorgasbord of meaty dishes. Hope you enjoy this one. The fare at Ahmedia Hotel was mostly Mughlai, inspired by the culinary traditions of erstwhile North Arcot principality. Over decades the kitchens here have perfected time-honored recipes, amongst them a wood-fire-cooked biryani that, unusual for Tamil Nadu, favours the basmati over seeraga samba rice. I discovered Ahmedia three years ago on a #gourmetontheroad tour through the region when I met the founder and his enterprising sons. Janab Ahmed Basha has passed on since, but his sons seem determined to build on their father’s legacy. And have now opened a massive 25,000 sq. ft., 250-seat Ahmedia branch on the Bengaluru Chennai highway with the conveniences required to cater to travellers. I visited them on a recent trip to Chennai, where I tasted most of my favourite dishes here, including the biryani that has put Vaniyambadi on the culinary map. Hope you enjoy this episode. Farmers congregate from Magadi, Karnataka bringing the pick of their crops and the cooks from Shree Vasavi Condiments cook up a host of preparations, each one featuring the avarebele. I was recently invited to open this festival with a host of other dignitaries including Mrs. Sudha Murthy, Sihi Kahi Chandru Sir and others. Hope you enjoy this vlog account of my experience there. I catch up with them at their cosy restaurant and also savour many of the dishes that offer a stellar showcase of Kodagu’s rich culinary traditions. Soon after the video was released, customers turned up in plenty to support him and it looked like nothing could go wrong. Until he arrived one morning to find his streetside eatery demolished without notice, and to make matters worse, the pandemic followed soon after. Today, Kumar and his wife, Rajalakshmi are once again trying to rebuild their lives and their small omelet business with a borrowed push cart that is parked outside a supportive store.
