After many years of international sanctions that crippled the Iranian army’s ability to modernize, Iran has come to rely heavily on its light infantry and special forces. Subscribe Now - ⚔️ 🤍 ⚔️ These forces are instrumental in providing security on the troublesome stretches of the border with Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iraq. They also protect Iranian interests abroad, and will have a major role to play in the event of an armed conflict breaking out with a regional adversary. Iran does not have an independent special operations service. The structure of its forces is unique; it consists of two major independent branches – the Armed Forces (army) proper, and the Islamic Revolutionary Guards. Both of these branches have their own special forces units (the Takavaran) in the ground and naval services. In addition to special forces units, the Revolutionary Guards also have a separate division called the Quds Force for special operations abroad. The exact numerical strength of all the Iranian special forces is unclear, but it must be in the tens of thousands. Given such a large size and diverse composition, the level of training and the quality of equipment varies significantly from one special forces unit to another. The 65th NOHED Independent Airborne (Parachute) Special Forces Brigade is widely believed to be the best-trained and equipped of the army special forces units. The regular army “commando” brigades, meanwhile, look more like light airborne assault units in terms of their composition and hardware. It is not quite clear how the Iranian special forces are manned. The Revolutionary Guards units are fairly straightforward: all the Guards forces are manned by professional soldiers. The army units, meanwhile, have a mixed system of conscription and professional service. All Iranian males are supposed to serve two years in the army or the security forces upon reaching 18.1 Conscripts therefore seem to account for the bulk of the Iranian army’s numerical strength – but some of the army special forces units (especially the 65th Brigade) are manned only by professionals. There is next to no information about the special forces units of the Ministry of Information (intelligence), which is the main Iranian foreign political intelligence and counterintelligence agency. Information about the ministry itself is scarce and unreliable. Welcome to Our Military Channel - Military Weapons. October 22, 2019 (Persian calendar 1398/7/30) Iran Army 65th Airborne Special Forces Brigade تیپ ۶۵ نیروهای ویژه هوابرد, or the 65th NOHED Brigade تیپ ۶۵ نوهد, is an Iranian Army Special Forces unit. Formerly being called 23rd Airborne Special Forces Brigade, it was established in 1959 and was expanded to 23rd Commando Division for some time during Iran-Iraq War. They are recognizable due to their use of safariflage DPM pattern camouflage. They wear a tactical vest and a green beret. The patch of the 65th is a dagger and golden wing superimposed over a green parachute with an Achaemenid-style shield on its background and is located on the left shoulder. The Tondar تندر (MP5A3) and Tondar Light تندر سبك (MP5K) (Iranian-built collapsible stock variant of MP5) is their standard weapon, replacing the older Uzi. The Hostage Rescue Unit is one of the units of the brigade, which has its own base in Mehrabad International Airport فرودگاه بين المللي مهرآباد. It is also known as Unit 110. According to the brigade commander Khosravi خسروي, the hostage rescue forces of the brigade are "our most elite forces". This unit cooperates with security organizations. The unit has a special insignia. One of the training camps is located in jungles of Kelardasht جنگل كلاردشت, in which jungle warfare is trained during spring. The winter training camp is in Emamzadeh Hashem امامزاده هاشم, in which there is a ski resort dedicated to the brigade, used for training snow warfare. The summer camp is located at Karaj Dam سد كرج. Another camp is located in the desert of Qom كوير قم, in which desert warfare is trained. Iran has deployed female special forces to its streets for the first time in a desperate bid to quell mass protests that erupted last week over a young woman dying after a beating at the hands of morality police. As human rights groups said the death toll from the unrest had risen to 31, the elite commando unit was dispatched to patrol streets with photographers to catch protest ringleaders. The death of Mahsa Amini, who was allegedly beaten by morality police for improper dress before she fell into a coma, has led to unprecedented demonstrations across the country. Failing to wear a headscarf has been illegal in Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. In a video released on Thursday, the female commando unit's leader Colonel Heydari confirmed the female troops were being deployed at public protests for the first time. When asked by reporters if the presence of female commandos would only fuel the unrest, he responded: "The arrival of our women's police force is to bring peace. I'm sorry to see other women in these protests carrying out illegal actions that are inconsistent with social rules." He was then confronted over Iranian forces attacking female demonstrators, and insisted: "There is a way to protest. There is a law and the Iranian state has clear rules on what is allowed. The temporary protest that we see here is an illegal act." Subscribe to The Telegraph with our special offer: just £1 for 3 months. Apply to become an Agilite gear tester Here: 🤍 About Agilite TOOLS FORGED ON ISRAELI BATTLEFIELDS THAT GIVE YOU AN EDGE Agilite is a premium Israeli manufacturer of battle-proven tactical gear that was born from the need to defend our country. As Israelis, we've always had to innovate to survive in order to protect our families and our homeland. Our gear has always had to stay one step ahead of our enemies. WE PASS THIS ADVANTAGE ON TO YOU whether you're defending your country, your community or your home. The IDF and Israel are known for many things, creativity, ingenuity, flexibility, but at the top of the list is bravery. Being able to face impossible odds and come out on top, is still one of Israel's greatest strengths. At the forefront of showing the courage of Israel’s people, is the IDF’s Paratroopers brigade. The origins of paratrooping date back more than a century. In the first world war as airplanes evolved into useful tools for combat and delivery, the idea of sending a large amount of troops and supplies to an area otherwise unreachable, was enticing to say the least. The first use of Paratroopers in combat on a large scale was during World War II, as they were often used in surprise attacks, to seize strategic targets behind enemy lines. By this point, almost every large military power had at least one paratrooper brigade, and In 1949, Israel added their own brigade to the mix. Since then, the Israeli paratroopers brigade have taken part in almost all of Israel's wars and operations. The brigade and its subsequent companies and units were considered to be the elite of the IDF’s infantry units, being sent on the toughest and most dangerous missions. Some of their operations have even shaped the history of Israel and the Middle east. For example: It was the 55th paratrooper company that captured the temple mount in Jerusalem during the six day war in 1967. In operation entebbe, one of the greatest and most successful hostage rescue missions of all time, the rescue team was made up of mostly paratroopers, who played a vital role in the rescue of israel citizens being held hostage. In 1956 in the Suez war; 6 companies composed of 356 Israeli paratroopers parachuted for the first and only time in IDF combat history, into Egyptian territory in sinai. The Mitla Pass battle was an especially tough operation, as the relatively small unit fought over a thousand Egyptian soldiers. After two days of non-stop fighting, Israeli paratroopers managed to take over a critical mountain pass, a decisive moment in the war that led to Israel’s victory over Egypt. This and countless other missions and operations, have shaped not only what it means to be a paratrooper, but what it means to be a combat soldier in the IDF, as the paratroopers have been recognized as the image of bravery. This is symbolized by the fact that the brigade is still also trained in traditional parachuting to this day, despite the fact that the IDF admits that with advancing technologies, static-line parachuting is a thing of the past, as it’s much easier to get many soldiers from one place to another quickly with helicopters or other, newer infiltration techniques. So why do they still practice jumping out of a cargo plane at 150 MPH and 400 feet above the ground? It is to instill in the spirit of the paratroopers the ideology of bravery they need to find in themselves for the IDF and for Israel. Every symbol and distinction of the brigade leads back to this ideology of bravery. The unit's insignia is the flying snake, a symbol taken from the Bible quote “for out of the serpent’s root shall come forth a viper, and his fruit shall be a fiery flying serpent”. The quote represents how the paratroopers can be put anywhere and strike at their opponents viciously. Their iconic red maroon beret and shoes, taken from the British army’s paratroopers, has been passed down from the israeli paratroopers to subsequent SF units like sayeret matkal, duvdevan and many other of Israel's elite units, many of whom start their basic and advanced training in the Paratroopers. Since their inception The paratroopers brigade were and still are a vital component of the IDF and israel’s principles. Their continued existence and missions have been the ideal symbol of Israel's bravery and courage.
