14 OVERUSED ENGLISH WORDS - Stop Using Them! Use these alternatives

Sound like a native speaker - replace these overused words in your English! Ad: The first 100 people to go to 🤍 are going to get unlimited access for 1 week to try it out. You’ll also get 25% off if you want the full membership. Today, I am going to teach you what are some overused words in English and what are the alternatives that you can use to sound more like a native speaker. (1) LIKE. I’m not talking about the filler word “like,” as in, “I want, like, go skating.” I’m talking about the verb, 'like'. You can use 'admire', 'adore', 'cherish', 'fancy' instead. (2) IMPORTANT. If you want to identify some detail or idea as important, alternate possibilities you might use incorporate ‘significant’, ‘vital’, ‘critical’, ‘imperative’ and ‘essential’. (3) NEW. This word is used over and over again in English. For example, you can replace it with 'updated' or 'modern'. (4) REALLY. Think of it this way: If you’re saying something is “really” tall, you’re missing the mark. How tall is it? Quantify it. If something has “really” improved, readers want to know how much. Qualify it. (5) AND. Typically overused by being placed multiple times in the same sentence. Simply break up the sentence into multiple sentences or replace the conjunction with the words 'moreover' or 'in addition to'. (6) INTERESTING. This word is widely used and yoг can replace it with 'cool', 'mesmerizing'. (7) GOOD. People consider this word as an average compliment. Replace it with 'amazing', 'fascinating', 'mesmerizing', 'impressive' (8) SMART. A smart person has probably been called 'smart' countless times, but how many times have they been called 'wise' or 'ingenious'? Use these alternatives instead of overused 'smart' (9) EXPLAIN. It’s common to say that you’re going to ‘explain’ something in your essay or speech. Other options here include ‘clarify’, ‘elaborate’. (10) THING. Instead of this word you can use 'concept' but make sure you use it correctly. This is one of many synonyms you can use. (11) SEE. There are so many alternatives that you can use! The most common ones are 'glimpse', 'stare', 'observe', 'notice'. (12) ALSO. This one and “and” are overused. The word ‘also’ is great for connecting two related sentences but you might need a few alternatives in a longer essay (‘furthermore’, ‘moreover’, ‘in addition’) (13) CHANGE. Possible replacements for the verb ‘change’ include ‘transform’, ‘modify’ and ‘adjust’. (14) SAID. If you’re quoting several sources, you might find yourself using ‘said’ or ‘says’ a lot. To prevent repetition, try using these alternatives: 'claimed', 'stated', 'declared', 'argued', 'suggested', 'explained'. 15 OVERUSED ENGLISH WORDS you should try to AVOID

1630375

00:12:49
11.09.2020

Sound like a native speaker - replace these overused words in your English! For a limited time, use the link in my description to get a free trial of Skillshare Premium Membership: 🤍 Today, I am going to teach you what are some overused words in English and what are the alternatives that you can use to sound more like a native speaker. (1) ANGRY. The word “angry” is far too general to effectively convey the idea and intention behind it. A wife may be angry at her husband. And victims of crime may be angry at criminals. But aren’t there better ways to more exactly express this strong emotion? Alternatives: annoyed, cross, displeased, furious, offended, etc. (2) OTHER. The word “other” is applicable to basically any situation where you’re trying to figure something out with a person. You can ask for “any other suggestions,” solicit “other opinions,” or ask someone for “other times” that work for them. Alternatives: alternative (times), further (suggestions), different (opinions) (3) ANSWER. This word is both a verb and a noun. When used as a verb (e.g. ‘to answer my research question’) you could also use terms like ‘address’ and ‘resolve’. When used as a noun (e.g. ‘the answer to this dilemma’), good alternatives include ‘solution’ and ‘explanation’. (4) LITERALLY. “Literally” refers to the most basic, straightforward meaning of something—as in, the opposite of “figuratively.” So, if you say “I was literally drowning in paperwork,” that means your body really was submerged in a pile of papers. If that’s not truly what happened, but you feel you must intensify your statement, try “positively” or “absolutely,” which add emphasis without making it seem as if your life was in danger. (5) MORE. “More” is one of those catchall terms. In some cases, “more” can mean the same thing as “other.” Sometimes, this is just the most accurate word to use, so don’t worry too much about trying to get this one out of rotation. Check out “other” for some alternatives. Alternatives: additional (perspectives), incremental (improvements), greater (context) (6) NICE. Oh, how nice! But overusing this word is not. When describing people, authors may prefer you to translate with more exact words like attractive, charming, cordial, delightful, etc. (7) DESCRIBE. When referring to the work of others you might draw upon their written descriptions. Substitute words for ‘describe’ include ‘portray’, ‘characterize’ and ‘report’. (8) USE. If describing an experiment you’ll need to identify the methods used. As well as ‘use’, terms which can be helpful here include ‘utilize’, ’employ’, ‘apply’ and ‘adopt’. (9) HARD. You could swap “hard” (in the sense of “requiring considerable physical or mental effort”) for “demanding,” “arduous,” “onerous,” “grueling,” “exacting,” “laborious,” “challenging,” or plain old “difficult.” (10) MANY. “Many” may seem like a go-to option when referring to an indeterminate group of things. But if you have an idea of the volume of what you’re talking about, it’s better to narrow it down. Alternatives: multitude, handful, numerous, thousands, etc. (11) ABLE. Next time you want to ask someone if they’ll “be able” to do something, use another phrase. Alternatives: manage, handle, support (12) BAD. Maybe “bad” doesn’t cut it when you’re trying to express how you feel about the movie you saw last night. Was it subpar, lousy? Take your pick! (13) HAPPY. There’s a word for every shade on the happiness spectrum. If you’re feeling happy, that could mean you’re pleased, cheerful, delighted, thrilled, ecstatic—the list goes on. (14) UNIQUE. To indicate that something differs from the norm, try another word such as “exceptional,” “distinctive,” “idiosyncratic,” “atypical,” “extraordinary,” “anomalous,” or “peculiar.” (15) BEST. “Best” isn’t the only way to provide a superlative. Are you looking for the top-quality pair of socks, or the pair of socks that are perfect for you? Both of these pairs of socks could be the “best.” Time codes: 0:00 What would you say instead of "nice"? 0:37 #1 Angry 1:45 #2 Other 2:09 #3 Answer 2:28 #4 Literally 3:02 About Skillshare 4:39 #5 More 6:24 #6 Nice 7:39 #7 Describe 8:31 #8 Use 8:44 #9 Hard 9:17 #10 Many 10:14 #11 Able 10:29 #12 Bad 11:00 #13 Happy 11:34 #14 Unique 12:17 #15 Best ⭐ INSTAGRAM - linguamarina ⭐ LEARN LANGUAGES ABROAD - 🤍 ⭐ ENROLL IN MY YOUTUBE COURSE - 🤍 ⭐ DOWNLOAD MY ENGLISH WORKBOOK - 🤍 📝 Get your English text corrected instantly - 🤍s/ 📷 FILMING EQUIPMENT - Gear for making my 'talking head' videos - 🤍 - Gear for vlogging - 🤍 🎈PROMOS $20 TO SPEND ON UBER - 🤍 I use affiliate links whenever possible (if you purchase items listed above using my affiliate links, I will get a bonus) #English #OverusedWords #EnglishVocabulary

In this video I share hacks that help memorize thousands of English words per day and grow your vocabulary. 📝 Get your English text corrected instantly - 🤍s/ Related videos: 50 most common English phrases - 🤍 - Best TV shows to learn English - 🤍 - How to speak English like an American - 🤍 📗🇺🇸 My book about how I got full financial aid to study in the USA (my story + tips) - 🤍 How to learn hundreds of English words a day 1. There are words in English that work both as a noun and verb - so by learning one work your learning two -   work, drive, try, kiss, drink, dream, milk (доить), hope, love 2. Words that end with -tion would be almost the same in your own language, super easy to learn - ambition (ambicion, Ambition, ambitzione), motivation (motivacion, Motivation, motivazione). Dissertation, profession, portion, intonation, convention, sanction, concentration, delegation, illustration 3. Look for images for particular words - you will be surprised you’ve already used them a lot in your life. Sometimes words just remind you of something - a song, a band. Spear which is a weapon - I think of Britney Spears. Beetle = a bug, Volkswagen New Beetle car, which looks like a bug, gosling - is a baby goose - and you know who I am thinking about - Ryan Gosling. 4. Some words have several meanings - try to learn at least a couple of meanings to diversify your vocabulary - fire = flame, to let someone go (employee), date = going out with a loved one, date as a fruit, date as a day in a calendarmiss = to skip something, to long to see someone, miss like a girl 5. There are a lot of words that are almost identical in a lot of languages - aquarium, antidepressant, avocado, argument, sensor, caramel, control, cocktail, scandal, organism 6. When you speak it’s very important to remember the words, which I call a safety net - these should be learnt by heart right now. Words include - I, you, she, he, eye, female, etc. - they are all mentioned in my video - 100 Most Common English Words 7. Learn expressions - are you nuts? 🥜 save face, I am all ears, to feel blue- every day words form combinations that have a completely different meaning 8. Talk to yourself when you learn a new word or expression using it. For example, if you liked the video you can comment below “Marina, I was all ears!” Which means that you listened to the video really carefully and wrote things down. 9. Be aware of false friends. Some words in English might sound like a word a your language, but mean a completely different thing. One of the common words is Actual - in English in means current, related to present time. In Spanish Actual is real.Eventuell = perhaps, eventually = in the end ⭐ INSTAGRAM - linguamarina ⭐ LEARN LANGUAGES ABROAD - 🤍 ⭐ ENROLL IN MY YOUTUBE COURSE - 🤍 ⭐ DOWNLOAD MY ENGLISH WORKBOOK - 🤍 📷 FILMING EQUIPMENT - Gear for making my 'talking head' videos - 🤍 - Gear for vlogging - 🤍 🎈PROMOS $20 TO SPEND ON AIRBNB - 🤍 $20 TO SPEND ON UBER - 🤍 I use affiliate links whenever possible (if you purchase items listed above using my affiliate links, I will get a bonus)
