Learn More about My Start in Tech: 🤍 There are 3 stages to anyone's coding career: learning how to code, getting the job, and performing at that job. You'd think these would take the same skills, but unfortunately that's not exactly the case. When you are learning how to code, you're learning syntax, and the basics of any programming language - variables, loops, data types, data structures, algorithms. A lot more if you're going through a CS program. You'll even get into building your own projects - some simple, some maybe complex. But that's not the only thing different when working as a professional developer. You do need to take the majority of those skills you learned when you first started, but unless you were just on your while learning, there's so much more to the job. You must have a familiarity with, and actually become proficient in, Git, code review, Agile or whatever dev methodology your team uses. That entails learning whatever version control system they use, and whatever project management system they use. Chances are when you were learning, you didn't use CI/CD. Or code analysis tools like SonarQube to ensure code quality and track technical debt. And these are a few of the things I'd like to talk about today - what you learn on the job as a software engineer. Hard skills, soft skills, and maybe potential salary. How I became a self-taught Software Engineer & How I learned to code from completely zero without a Computer Science degree or Bootcamp! In fact, I haven’t paid a single cent for any courses, materials, or methods I’ve used. Coding is a skill that you can learn for free on the internet in not that much time. And I am proof of that. All I knew was that it had something to do with typing complicated stuff on a computer. I got the idea of learning how to code after I graduated with an Economics Degree from a university in London. Economics is a highly valued degree, most people who do it in top universities like mine become investment bankers and stuff like that. I did an internship at a big bank too, but I hated it. So I started looking into what career path could give me a lot of money, and also a great work-life balance. So I discovered, software engineering. I learned that to become a software engineer, all you really need is to know how to code. So I typed on Google, how to learn to code, and I ended up starting with Python for Everybody and the Odin Project, these are both free resources, the former introduced me to one of the most popular programming languages of today, Python, and the latter familiarized me with the basics of Web Development using HTML, CSS and Javascript. At this point my goal was just to get a vague sense of the vast world of programming, to start understanding what was out there, how the different pieces like front-end and backend development fit together and what they mean at a high level. Going through the Odin Project I got a basic sense for many interesting topics such as how the internet works and what it actually means to open a web page on your browser. I will also tell you how I got my first job in tech as a Software Engineer.. DISCLAIMER: some of the links in the description may be affiliate links. For this video, I am testing chatGPT and github copilot Artificial Intelligence programs against a simple react interview question. Will AI take programming jobs in 2023? Personally, right now I think the AI tools we have are a little primitive, but very helpful. Copilot is amazing personally.

Will AI Replace Programmers and Take Over Jobs? Is AI going to be a replacement for software developers in the near future? Let's talk more about that in this video. Did you know there's a lot of factors and things that you'll need to overcome to become a programmer that aren't specifically related to coding? My name is Tim Buchalka and I have put together a series of videos which I call the "Programming Tip of the Day". And basically, each video goes through talking about some of the pitfalls and things that you'll need to overcome to succeed as a programmer, things like overcoming frustration and keeping yourself motivated. In this series I will also answer common questions about choosing a programming language to learn, questions about your career path and things of that nature. Now there's a lot of other things as well that I'll cover in these videos and I'm also opening the lines for you to tell me what you want me to cover. Now I've been a programmer for over 35 years so I think I'm real qualified to answer a lot of these questions. So if you do have a question, pop the question in the comments section of this video and I'll do my best to address that in a future video. If you're ready to look at the next tip, click on the link below to get redirected to the playlist for all programming tips: 🤍 If you're interested in coding specific programming videos, click on the link below to get redirected to the playlist for programming videos: 🤍 Consider subscribing by clicking on the Subscribe button right below the video. Watch Eli's REAL Adventures at: 🤍 To Ask Questions Email: Question🤍EliTheComputerGuy.com I have been watching you for over three years and your videos are great! I do however have a problem with the IT field, particularly with software development. I graduated as a programmer from a community college but found it difficult to find a job as a developer. If I were to look for a C# role, I would find experience for C# but also a number of other languages or experience needed in technologies that I haven't heard of. It seems to be like as a developer I need to know 20 different things just to be qualified as a developer for a particular language. Because of this I haven't been able to apply to any of the jobs because I don't have experience with certain technologies and as a result I have been working as a help desk analyst since I meet the requirements for that role as and IT guy who learned things as time went by. Why is this the case and how do tackle this issue in order to start my career as a developer? -Anon
