In this video, I found a new spot with hard bottom and rocks while searching for tripletail roughly 9 miles offshore near Tampa Bay, Florida. I dropped a couple baits down and immediately learned that it was loaded with good keeper size mangrove snapper and gag grouper. It made for some really good fishing and some awesome underwater footage when I dropped a GoPro down to the bottom to see what the structure was like and what fish were around. On this day the swell was relatively large. Searched for a location that was barely fishable and it payed off. Had to keep a very close eye on the swell and fish correctly. it only takes one good fish on the outing and this was it! Sydney rocks can be challenging as they are heavily fished in most locations. Another day out on Moreton Bay, catching some of the best fish it has to offer, all casting lures! Bit of wind to start the day and packs of sharks hanging off jew schools, seen us improvise and chase some fish in the shallows in a protected area. I fished fly and Damo used a plastic and we caught a range of different species. Once the wind backed off, we took the back way to Harries to see if my big School of giant snapper was still there and it was!! The first fish was a massive 82cm fish and the next seemed as big but unfortunately sharks spoiled our fun and stole my next fish. Like clock work, the mackerel turned up and I got a nice spotty to add to the esky. The wind puffed in and we set off to avoid rough water, looking for mackerel and stopping at the jew spot on the way home. We seen some big long tail tuna on the way back but blew our chances with ordinary casting. Here are my top four mangrove snapper fishing rigs, plus some techniques and tips to help you fill the cooler. Rig #1 - Knocker Rig - This rig is ideal when you want your bait to stay closer to the sea floor. However, you can let out line and which allows the bait to come up if necessary. Rig #2 - Weighted Hook - I love using a weighted hook for natural presentation and minimal hardware. Doing this is simple and effective. Purchase the weighted hooks here: 🤍 Rig #3 - Carolina Rig - The Carolina rig has always been very effective. I like using a 1/2 or 1/4 ounce weight, 20lb Spro leader, and a 1 or 2/0 Gamagatsu circle hook. Rig #4 - Freelining - My favorite technique is the free line method. This allows the fish to come off structure and gives you the best odds of landing them on light tackle. Grey snapper have keen eyesight, and the free line method allows you to trick the fish on a regular basis. Use an 🤍OkumaFishingUSA SRT and Cedros for optimal success. Our buddy Mike had sick deep drop numbers and we caught yelloweye and queen snapper, almaco and greater amberjacks, as well as a mystic grouper! This is a fish I've wanted to catch my entire life! The Cubera Snapper is the largest snapper species in the world. Every year around the full moon in August and September Giant Cubera snapper spawn offshore on wrecks. This makes it easier to locate these generally solitary and nomadic fish. Cubera Snapper have such large teeth and powerful jaws that they are able to feed on live spiny lobster, which is what we use as bait. Live lobster are the best bait to use when targeting cubera snapper, as this is one of their main staples in their diet! Big Cubera Snapper often get a bad name when it comes to table fare, as they are thought to contain Ciguatera which can cause poisoning.
