We get a ton of questions about how different tone woods affect the sound of a guitar. So when we got our PRS Special 22 Semi-Hollow Wood Library run we thought it would be cool to compare the tonal differences between the Korina and Swamp Ash bodied guitars that we hand picked. Mahogany just takes it for me. It’s always got a darker undertone. Nothing like it. 2nd place was korina back and maple neck. Very cool sound.
Thanks so much for doing this video. This was almost exactly what I was looking for. Am debating tone woods for a semi hollow build with set neck and 25.5 scale from a different manufacturer. This goes a long way in helping me to decide on which route to go. It is now down to Korina back, maple top, and maple neck and board vs. an Alder body. Will not go wrong with either of those options and might just go Korina simply for aesthetics.
Listening to this particular video with headphones I think the sea foam green with Korina back & Maple neck is the clear winner to my ears. It sounds very natural while playing on the clean channel and still has bite and a gritty personality on the dirty channel. I thought the Ash body with Rosewood neck was also very good on the clean channel, but not as good on the dirt channel. I felt the regular Mahogany had more character on the dirt channel than both Rosewood and Korina neck guitars. Then of course at the end of the day, every guitar can be different so the tone wood debate can become irrelevant as the overall guitar is greater than the sum of its parts. Gotta take each finished article on its own merits. Cool demo Jessie. Cheers from Portland 👍
